Why
write about it . . .
Carnival
in Basel
Russell
Palmer from the Swiss Tourist Board
explains why
Basel's carnival, from 1 to 3 March
2004, is one of the best and liveliest
festivals in all of Switzerland.
Carnival, the feasting season before
the beginning of Lent, is celebrated
in one form or another in many
European countries and is even the
basis for New Orleans' famous Mardi
Gras.
Whether it's named for
Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras), Farewell to
Meat (Carnival, literally carne vale
in Latin), or Fasnacht (fast - really
pre-fast -- night), carnival always
means fun, sarcasm, lots of noise,
crazy costumes, and of course,
traditional foods.
Although many places
in all parts of Switzerland celebrate
carnival, Basel's is the most
elaborate celebration, rich in
tradition, beautiful costumes and
excellent celebratory foods.
Many of the present
Fasnacht customs date from the
nineteenth century, but the
celebration in its present form began
in the days of the
Reformation.Fasnacht begins with
Morgestraich on the Monday after Ash
Wednesday at 4 am. At
that time all the lights in the city
are extinguished so that the only
light visible comes from the lanterns
of the costumed cliques of revellers.
The whole city turns
out to watch and as soon as the first
rays of light appear (the lights go on
again at 5AM), everyone heads for
their favourite restaurant for a meal
of Basler Maehlsuppe (Basel Flour
Soup, this month's recipe) accompanied
by Zibelewaie and Kaeswaie (onion pie
and cheese pie).
Throughout the
celebration that continues over three
days good Baslers eat Fasnachtskiechli,
a deep-fried pastry like a funnel
cake, covered with sugar, and
Faschtewaie, a kind of pretzel
sprinkled with caraway seeds.
On Monday from 2 pm to 6 pm the first
cortege, or Fasnacht procession begins
and crosses back and forth over the
Rhine bridges, the cliques parade in
costume with their flutes and drums.
Tuesday is
Kinderfasnacht or children's carnival
during the day, with fanciful costumes
and lots of Kiechli.
Tuesday evening the
Muensterplatz, or cathedral square is
the scene of the reading of the
lanterns.
Each clique writes
satirical, sarcastic or critical
verses on its main lantern. They may
be about Basel, Swiss or world events,
but are always hilariously funny.
Wednesday is another cortege as on
Monday afternoon and afterwards there
is the famous brass concert of the
Guggemuusig in the Barfuesserplatz.
One player carries the
melody and all the others play out of
tune - I think I need another bowl of
Maehlsuppe! Fasnacht officially ends
at daylight on Thursday, what a
celebration.

Fayetteville,
North Carolina
Melody Foote tells you why
Many people don’t realise that
Fayetteville, NC is a city with many
‘firsts’, and the greater
Fayetteville area is rich in history
and tradition.
Strongly sympathetic
to America’s cause for independence,
the Marquis de Lafayette fought
alongside George Washington and was
later responsible for convincing his
country to send troops. As a result,
many U.S. cities were named after the
French nobleman turned Revolutionary
War hero. But Fayetteville, North
Carolina, was the first.
Today, visitors to
Fayetteville can experience
fascinating history from every era. As
home to the nation’s largest
military complex (Ft. Bragg and Pope
Air Force Base), there’s a wealth of
military lore and proud American
tradition on display.
The world-class
Airborne & Special Operations
Museum, in the heart of Fayetteville’s
quaint, revitalised downtown, is truly
one of a kind. It chronicles the
courage and exploits of America’s
elite forces from the 1940’s to
modern day.
When it comes to
sports, the city has an NBA
development league team, an arena
football team and minor league hockey
team to thrill crowds at the city’s
vibrant Coliseum. First-rate
facilities abound for a wide range of
indoor or outdoor sports. Numerous
special events and tournaments take
place in Fayetteville every year.
The hometown of
golfers Raymond Floyd, Marlene Floyd
and Chip Beck is a golfer’s paradise
– with year-round mild climate plus
many top-notch, challenging and
affordable public courses.
There are so many
interesting and entertaining things to
see and do in our ‘city of firsts.’
We hope people will
put Fayetteville among the ‘firsts’
on their list of places to visit.
Fayetteville’s slogan is
"History, Heroes and a Hometown
Feeling," and we have it all.
From heroes on playing fields and
heroes on battlefields, to captivating
history, to the warm hospitality that
welcomes visitors everywhere they go.
Fayetteville is
located directly off I-95 and is
exactly half-way between New York and
Florida.
