Travel writing – what’s in a name
Travel writers' are often asked what
they do and though a precise definition
may be, by turns, obvious and/or
irrelevant Ashley Gibbins has nevertheless
decided to get the views of fellow travel
journalists and photojournalists.
This is what we have so far.
Option one
An occupation taken up by passionate
people who care enough to bring the places
and cultures of this world to life on
paper for an insignificant amount of
money.
Option two
How about: story-telling with a strong
sense of setting and a notional sense of
plot? To me, travel writing is taking the
world we live in and breaking it down into
digestible bits that hopefully will
inspire even one person who reads your
words into wanting to know more. Don't
know if that's the answer you were looking
for, but it's what keeps me doing this
job.
Option
three
Travel Writing: Writing that takes you
to an unfamiliar place or gives you a new
view of a familiar place. Writing that
shows how place affects what you do, what
you think and how you develop. Writing
that introduces newly discovered secrets
of old cultures, and helps the reader see
connections with his/her own life. Vera
Option four
Travel journalism is largely about the
details of the destination as relayed to
you by the journalist. Occasionally if
he/she is very talented, you'll also get a
sense of the flavour and ambience of the
place as well as the telephone number.
Travel writing, on the other hand, is
often as much about the writer and his/her
journey to the destination and personal
interaction with it, and usually the phone
number is totally irrelevant.

New travel markets open up
by Gillian Thornton
mailto:gillian.thorntons@btinternet.com
A number of
new travel magazines have made
their newsstand debut in recent weeks
and could open up new opportunities for
freelances with the right area of
expertise.
Merricks
Media of Bath, publishers of French
Magazine, have launched two
titles - Spanish Magazine and Holiday
Cottages Magazine - whilst at the
time of writing, Brooklands Publishing
were due to launch Everything Spanish
as a sister title to Everything French.
Still with a Spanish theme, Canaries-based
glossy Living Tenerife launched on the UK
newsstands in October.
Meanwhile,
if you're a specialist in cruising,
look out for Cruise Magazine, a new
quarterly from I & J Publishing which
aims to provide all the answers for novice
and experienced cruisers alike
Finally, Archant
Life has added French Property News to
their portfolio of Francophile
titles. The subscription-only
monthly joins Living France and France
Magazine in the Archant stable and
could also join them on our high
streets before long.
Advice wanted from Cuba
My name is
John Harden, I am a CIoJ Travel Writer,
and would like any advice other members
can offer.
Imagine you
are permanently resident in Cuba after a
30-odd-year stint in Italy. So, it's a
very long time since you had regular
contact with the UK scene. You are a
professional photographer and also have a
long experience in writing, though not in
"reporting" as such.
Now, you
are looking for leads into those
world-wide markets which could well be
interested in your local knowledge coupled
with your writing and photographic skills.
But Cuba is an island in more ways than
one. You dare not even dream of getting
copies of foreign magazines, not even by
post.
You can
exult in now having smooch-slow Internet
access, but at a pound an hour including
outages.
You realise,
from what your colleagues write, that the
world you want to get into is bewildering
fast and vast with respect to your own
communications resources and expertise.
But you also realise that what you have in
hand must be valuable to lots of people
around the world. You realise Cuba is
"hot".
What would
you do? Contact John Harden at
mailto:w-wls@softhome.net
Opportunities
Guide books writers for the English
regions needed
Hunter
Publishing is looking for authors for its
adventure guides to the English regions.
These would be sold in bookstores and to
libraries throughout North America (visit
www.hunterpublishing.com). The books
should be at least 120,000 words and cover
all aspects of travel to the area, such as
where to stay, getting there and getting
around, dining, sightseeing, activities,
history, culture and the various
practicalities.
The
"adventures," such as walking,
diving, fishing, biking or horseback
riding, are only one component of the
books and should be the kinds of
activities that most travellers can enjoy.
Baby boomers are our largest market
segment. Normally, one author, or a
couple, writes each of our guides.
Prospective authors should already be
thoroughly familiar with the area and be
either frequent visitors or local
residents.

Israel to force security checks on
Journalists
Israel will
force journalists to undergo stringent
checks
by its Shin Bet security service as
a requirement for accreditation.
Government Press Office director Daniel
Seaman says he will hand a list of more
than 17,000 accredited journalists to the
Shin Bet for security checks
in January.
After journalists are accredited under the
new system, the Shin Bet will evaluate
them and inform the
press office if they
pose a threat. Based on the Shin Bet's
assessment, the press office will decide
whether journalists can keep the
credentials, which are necessary to enter
government buildings, attend news
conferences and meet with government
officials in their offices. Source: AP

Why visit …..
Melvyn's Restaurant at the Ingleside
Inn, Palm Springs, CA
Greta
Garbo slept there. Carol Lombard and Clark
Gable honeymooned there. Frank Sinatra
threw a lavish pre-wedding dinner the
night before his wedding to Barbara
Marx. Goldie Hawn and
Kurt Russell flew in just to have a
poolside lunch and a swim.
The Ingleside Inn's list of guests reads
like a ‘Who's Who’ of Hollywood. Since
the 1930's when film stars escaped the
glare of Hollywood for a respite in Palm
Springs, this desert community has been
renowned for its allure and glamour.
New
Hollywood has now continued that
tradition. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
headed to Palm Springs after their media
frenzy Malibu wedding and new California
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria
Shriver have been happily ensconced at the
Ingleside Inn on many occasions.
What is the
mystique that draws celebrities and
visitors from around the world to Palm
Springs?
The palm
tree-lined avenues, the sweeping views of
Mt. San Jacinto and the Santa Rosa
Mountains, the stunning desert landscape,
all create a natural beauty that is both
tranquil and rejuvenating.
While the
town has developed into a sophisticated
tourist destination since Hollywood
discovered it in the 1930s, the quaint
charm of a ’village’ is still intact.
After a
major makeover this summer the Ingleside
Inn and its renowned restaurant Melvyn's
are ready to receive guests and Hollywood
notables in its grand style.
Dining
guests are now serenaded by strolling
violinist,
Giovanni, and Melvyn's -
nightly live entertainment and dancing is
still on the menu in the Casablanca
Lounge.
If you are
interested in a unique travel story in
Palm Springs based on the Ingleside Inn
and Melvyn's Restaurant contact Armida
Pedrin at contact@inglesideinn.com or
Lydia Kremer at LydiaLane@aol.com.
