SEGMENT 2 & 3
ADAM SALERNO

Business Liaison for the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security

Adam W. Salerno is a Business Liaison to the Private Sector Office at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He focuses on issues related to travel and tourism, Immigration, Model Ports, Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration. In this position he functions as both an advisor to and an advocate for the private sector inside of DHS. He is involved in projects to improve border security and increase efficiency and is committed to creating public private partnerships in an effort to finding new innovative ways to facilitate traffic and secure our ports of entry.
Mr. Salerno has worked with the Secure Borders Open Doors Advisory Counsel (SBODAC). The primary mission of the SBODAC is to ensure our borders are safe from those that would do us harm, while at the same time remain open and accessible to those visiting for legitimate purposes. SBODAC is part of a broader effort to enhance security and make the arrival process to the United States more streamlined, efficient and welcoming.
Salerno received his undergraduate degree in Economics and Political Science from Western New England College in Springfield, Massachusetts. More recently, he completed his Masters of Business Administration at the University of Massachusetts, Isenberg School of Management in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Security and Efficiency are KEY!

Registered Traveler Pilot Program: In June, the Transportation Security Administration launched the Registered Travel program to expedite safe travel for frequent flyers. The pilot program was launched with Northwest Airlines at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. In late July, the TSA will implement the program at the Los Angeles International Airport in coordination with United Airlines. In early August, TSA will begin operating in George Bush Intercontinental Airport/Houston in coordination with Continental Airlines. By the end of August, TSA intends to have the program also active in both Boston Logan International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport both in coordination with American Airlines. Click HERE for more info.
Black Diamond Self-Select Lanes: In the processing arena, the Transportation Security Administration launched a self-select lane pilot earlier this year in Salt Lake City, Utah. The self-select lane is aimed at enabling travelers to select a lane customized to their pace. Because the pilot was in a region of the country where skiing is a way of life, TSA modeled the lanes after well-known ski icons: green for beginners, blue for intermediate and black for expert. Listen to the interview between Adam and Sandy and learn more about checkpoint evolution, which is slowly spreading to terminals nationwide to help travelers get quickly and safely to their destinations!

SEGMENT 4
JOHN JENKINS

VP and Hotel Manager at the
Gaylord National Resort and
Convention Center in
Washington, DC

Gaylord National Resort Hotel and Convention Center, the cornerstone of the exciting new National Harbor project in Prince George's County, Maryland, shines in glass and steel from the banks of the historic Potomac River.
Located eight miles due south of Washington, D.C., the resort hotel is just 15 minutes away from our nation's capital--an ideal location for meetings and conventions. And with 470,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, Gaylord National is the largest combined hotel and convention center on the East Coast.
This luxurious new addition to the Gaylord Hotels family in Washington D.C. boasts 2,000 stylish guest rooms, including 110 lavish suites and 300 rooms in our exclusive National Bay area. Atrium and river views are available. Every room features high-speed wireless Internet access and two phones, including one cordless. Our spacious bathrooms all offer double vanities. You can even charge your laptop in the in-room safe while you're away.

  • If you wanted to spend one night in each of the 2,000 guest rooms at the Gaylord National Resort, it would take you more than five years to complete.
  • The highest point of the atrium is 230 feet high, meaning the 150-foot-tall space shuttle could easily be parked under it. The width of the atrium is 240 feet, or 80 yards long. It could take a football team 5 to 8 minutes to put together a scoring drive that would cover this distance.
  • The entire property features a total of 10 million square feet of drywall, which equals 312,500 sheets. If you stood these sheets of drywall end to end, they would stretch 473 miles, or halfway to Chicago.
  • Every individual meeting room in the Convention Center has enough data connectivity to transfer the entire encyclopedia Britannica (pictures and text) in one second. They are also each equipped with enough electrical power to service an average-sized, single-family home.
  • The structure has more than 50 different air handling systems.
  • Throughout the entire property, there are more than 50,000 individual sprinkler heads and more than 57,500 light fixtures. If you replace, on average, one lightbulb a month in your household light fixtures, you would have to replace more than one lightbulb an hour, 24 hours a day, in our hotel to achieve that same replacement rate.
  • The Prince George's Exhibit Hall is the size of three football fields and has enough space to accommodate up to 400 full-size, tractor-trailer trucks.
  • The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center encloses a total of 2,486,196 square feet.

  • The Gaylord National Hotel

Ever take that perfect picture while on vacation and you just have to share it with friends and family back home right away? Avid photographer and photo sharing expert JP Wollersheim talks with Sandy about some of the programs on the market today that can help travelers get those perfect pictures out for all to see without having to send e-mails back home that are loaded to the brim with megabytes. JP says of the 200 million consumer photographers in the country today, 69 percent are sharing via e-mail. In the last minute, 1.2 million digitals pictures have been taken, explains JP, which means plenty of people with photos to share. Find out what photo sharing program you like best when you listen to the interview, exclusively on TravelTalkRADIO!
